Our time in Indo has been divided in to two main ministries, one of them being a local health centre we have been working closely with for the last few weeks. The centre is run by two Christian pastors who have a heart for those suffering with no place to stay. With the little they have themselves, they house patients who travel over to the Island of Batam for medical treatment who don’t have the means to stay in any type of accommodation whatsoever. The centre provides shelter and food during this crucial time of healing and recovery. The centre is a lifeline, but is in much need of financial aid and major TLC by some willing volunteers! That’s where we come in. It’s been so so fruitful this ministry, a mixture of love and prayer for the patients as well as for the building.
I was introduced to a girl called Suzi. She has a brain tumour making her mobility really poor, as well as her eyesight, but she greeted me with the biggest smile. With our broken communication, we got to know each other and we found out we are both ’96 babies! It hit me in that moment how very different our 28 years on this Earth have been – we have both got to this point living two very different lives, ones we didn’t choose for ourselves. Knowing she is my age changed my perspective completely in that moment – if I was born to other parents, in another part of the world, our stories could easily be instantly different. I was so happy I got to pray for her, I gravitated towards her even before we spoke! As I was about to start praying, she grasped her hands together and bowed her head, and closed her eyes so so tightly – the expectancy and hope that she had in this prayer was overwhelming for me to witness, she had so much faith in God. I felt a lot of weight suddenly to honour God in delivering this prayer well, but I quickly remembered He was going to do all the work and bring healing in His own way over this inspirational and resilient young woman I had the privilege of meeting. She had a special place in my heart during the trip ever since.
We met so many amazing people at the health centre over the next few weeks. Our hearts broke seeing children living in beyond basic conditions, especially when they are feeling their worst and in need of all-round comfort. All they could afford was plastic on the floors. We played with them as much as possible, held them and loved on them for as long as time would allow. There was one thing we could do to help their living conditions whilst we were there…buy some much needed paint!! So many rooms were in need of some TLC, and we were blessed enough to have the funds thanks to you all, to buy all they needed for a good spruce up
